Tara Mattson was born, raised, and currently lives in Montana. Known as “Big Sky Country,” its majestic mountains and expansive skies serve as inspirations for her mosaic art. A mosaic artist for twenty-five years, she specializes in using slate as her primary medium. The use of stone hearkens back to the craftsmanship of the ancient past, now combined with contemporary vision and technique. Raw slabs of slate are hammered, chiseled, sawed, and nipped, then painstakingly combined with the highest quality cubic zirconia and other stones and minerals to create night scenes of the heavens and the earth. The result is a work of art with subtle layers, color, and sparkle that reflect exquisitely in all varieties of lighting. Each piece is stunning and one-of-a-kind.
